Those players who were out early on Thursday had the best of the conditions with Adam Scott shooting 6-under to lead after the opening round of the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes. The Australian is one shot clear of a trio of players including last week’s winner on the PGA, Zach Johnson.
Pre-tournament favourite, Tiger Woods is three shots off the lead after shooting an opening round 67 and is the 11/2 favourite in the betting with Scott narrowly behind at 7/1.
Rory McIlroy is third in the betting at 10/1 after also shooting 67 but would be much shorter had he not double-bogeyed the 15th.
There are a number of players who will need good rounds early on Friday to ensure that they stay round for the weekend. Chief among them will be Lee Westwood, who finished the day with a 73 in a round that had five bogeys and one double-bogey, and Justin Rose who ended with a 74.
US players Bo Van Belt, Keegan Bradley, Nick Watney and Rickie Fowler all finished one-over par and will feel more confident heading into their second rounds.
Phil Mickelson finished on three-over and will almost certainly be better on Friday.
