Ray Flanagan with a selection for the US Masters at Augusta
Along with it being Aintree week on the racing front, this is also a special week on the golfing terrain with the first Major of the year, The US Masters taking place at the famous Augusta National, the only major which is staged at the same venue every year. My only previous golfing selection on the site, Jason Day in the 2015 USPGA, proved to be a winning one so hopefully lightning can strike twice.
SkyBet have put up a very fair 1/4 odds eight places market and to my mind Justin Rose appeals as holding a fair each way shout. The Englishman is a previous Major winner (US Open 2013) and he was a consistent performer last year playing very well in 3 of the 4 big events. He was unlucky to bump into an inspired Spieth twelve months ago and it was a similar story in the USPGA where he was unable to keep tabs with a rampant Day but still performed creditably to finish third. Indeed one could argue that apart from Speith and Day he was the most consistent player in the big events last year never threathening to win but often finishing close enough to the eventual tournament winners.
He has a fine record at this venue and interestingly has led the Masters at the end of either Round One , Two or Three at some stage throughout the past eleven years. An excellent tee to green player, the main concern is his putting but if he can find some flow with the putter he could easily contend. Another slight doubt can be raised in terms of his scrambling capabilities from just off the green but in previous years his ball striking has been so good that he not had to scramble very much at all. Plus as stated, he was placed in two of the four majors last season despite not putting all that well , so if he can find any improvement in this area he could prove a solid each-way bet. In-addition it is worth mentioning that he is coming into the event in reasonable form (much better than in 2015), with six top 20 finishes possibly priming himself for a bold bid this week
