Take Fowler and Garcia for Open Golf

Our Ray Flanagan has two selections for this week’s British Open Golf at Royal Troon.

The British Open at Troon gets underway tomorrow and there is sure to be an enthralling four days of golf. From a betting perspective, many bookmakers are offering prices without the “big four”(Day, Johnson, McElroy and Spieth) and perhaps it may be prudent to play with this insurance given that any of these are capable of blowing the course apart.

Rickie Fowler has not been having the best of years but he has a natural links golf game and is certainly due a good major having flopped now in the last three big events. When winning the 2015 Players Championship at Sawgrass, Fowler displayed how good an iron player he can be and he has finished placed with top five finishes in all four majors including behind McElroy two years ago at Hoy Lake. His shot making and ball striking abilities should be ideally suited to this terrain and encouragingly he has shaped with some encouragement in recent weeks (finished tenth at Firestone) to indicate he might be the surprise packet.

Sergio Garcia is the perennial bridesmaid but certainly looks worth an interest especially in the “without favs” market. The Spanaird has a decent British Open record and similar to Fowler his ball striking and shot shaping abilities are among the best in the game. Crucially for his chance he is playing better this year coming into the event with a win on the PGA Tour and a solid fifth place finish at the US Open. His weakness has always been his putting but he appears to be playing very well tee to green and the forecast slightly longer grass combined with wet weather could make it easier to sink the putts.

For a real longshot, debutant Tony Finau might be worth a small flyer. Finau caught my eye in particular through the 2015 season playing very well at the US Open and the US PGA Championship indicating he is a coming player. There is always a debutant who excels himself, and this guy, a strong hitter with a low ball flight could easily have a good week.
