Ray Flanagan with selections for the Olympic Golf
Surprising apathy from many of the top golfers towards winning an Olympic Gold Medal but we still have a strong field competing and it only right that the golfers who show pride and honour in representing their countries and indeed honouring their sport will achieve the glory.
One man intent on performing well is German Martin Keymar who has spoken of his admiration for the sacrifices and training of his fellow Olympians in preparing for the event. A streaky player Kaymer can be deadly when he is on song although we have to go back two years to when he was at the height of his powers winning the Players Championship and US Open. I have been encouraged by his form in the last few months where he has finished on the fringes in a number of big events without threathening to win the tournaments. Kaymar’s head appears to be in the right place and he could mount a strong challenge.
Bubba Watson may be suited to the course and his power game should give him plenty of opportunities. He can blow hot or cold, but as a dual Masters Champion he has the pedigree and could easily be involved in the final standings.
Rickie Fowler has been a disappointment this year. Similar to myself in predicting winners of horse races, Rickie has loads of ability but he has been out of form in recent months unable to find his A-game. This course though may suit him given that it may pose an easier challenge than the courses which he has struggled with in the Majors and on the PGA Tour this year. It also has some similarities to links terrain were Fowler has played well before and he has also shown himself to be a good traveller on previous occasions.
