Ray Flanagan previews the US Open Golf
Brandt Snedeker could be described as something of a journeyman on the PGA tour but some of the stats point favourably towards his prospects this week. Shinnecock Hils will play like a links course , it could be windy and it ought to favour players who excel on Pro Annua Greens.
Snedeker has often been touted for his strong putting strokes and has previous winning form on Pro Annua green surfaces. He also holds a decent US Open record, he has performed better here than at the other majors and looks a lively outsider.
Bubba Watson is another to consider and has surprisingly been drifting in the market. He was raging hot a couple of months ago destroying a top class field in the world match play and he already won thus year on a Pro Annua course, the Genesis Open
A bit of an all or nothing player, his sharp chipping skills and long driving will be a big attribute and I expect he will contend.
Jason Day it is fair to say is talented enough to be a multiple major winner and surely he will in time win more than the solitary USPGA that he has won thus far. He tends to make heavy weather of it in the majors, but has been on the up again this year following a poor 2017. Looks to be the best putter on tour at present and that combined with his excellent short game will surely give him a chance, if he is not too erratic with his drivers and irons.
