Ray Flanagan with US Masters selections
thought for the day: It can be tricky trying to change a car tyre when you are not used to it.
An exciting weeks golf ahead at the US Masters. These are my selections
Outright- Rickie Fowler
Rickie Fowler has been my long-term fancy for this event and I see no reason to desert him at this stage. He has recorded two previous top five efforts and two just outside the top ten in a total of eleventh appearances. Course form is usually a strong pointer for this event and I was impressed with his play last year on the Saturday and Sunday where he posted a 65 and 67 to get within one shot of Patrick Reed who was well clear of him after two days.
Fowler’s chipping and putting are top drawer and my gut feeling is that Augusta is the venue where he can win a major if he is to land one. The big question mark is if he can avoid the type of treble bogey howlers which have ruined his chances in previous majors. The suspicion is though that he is getting there slowly and if he can return in the same vein of form he played the last 36 holes twelve months ago, maybe this is Rickie’s time.
SkyBet- (Special Market Without (Rose/Fowler/ Woods/McElroy/Rahm/Johnson)
Justin Thomas and Jason Day
The “without six” market operated by SkyBet is interesting and it could be well worth supporting a couple here with a few big dangers omitted.
Justin Thomas strikes me as potentially the gold bet of the week in this market. An explosive flair player, Thomas is the type who should excel at this venue and he has that bit of extra class that you need to win at Augusta. In fairness he has not been great in three previous visits but it can take a few goes to click on this course and Thomas could be ready to make significant strides this year. He has been playing very well tee to green in recent months and I think it is worth giving him the benefit of the doubt about his putting. He also was the best American player at the Ryder Cup and he is the type who thrives on the added pressure of the big events.
Finally Jason Day is not discounted. Injury concerns mean he is coming into the event somewhat under the radar and that could be a big help as sometimes the pressure can get to the Australian. Not easy to fancy on recent form but has the perfect game for Augusta and when he clicks he can find gears that most cannot match.
