Navan stages an excellent Sunday card while there are UK meetings at Carlisle and Southwell on an all national hunt day on Sunday. Peter Teazle has selected two very promising horses as his best bets of the day.
Southwell 1:30 – Truckers Steel
Truckers Steel won his point to point at the second attempt when he was successful at Dromahane in March and he was picked up by Tom George at Brightwells for £45,000 in April. He made the perfect start to his rules career when he was a very impressive winner of a bumper at this venue in October, where he made all the running and coasted home by 6 lengths from Countersign.
He tackles hurdles for the first time today and steps up to 2m4f for this debut. We would expect that he will race prominently as well and take the field along at a good pace and he could prove difficult to beat. Red Sherlock is clearly the one to beat and he has the best form in the book by some way, with 3 bumper wins including a victory in the listed bumper at the Cheltenham November meeting. However he has shown a few signs of temperament in those races and he has yet to tackle hurdles and does look short in this race. We will take him on each way with Truckers Steel at 5/1 with our money back if we are placed in the first three and we will also back Truckers Steel to place with William Hill at 6/4.
Navan 2:15 – Sizing Gold
Sizing Gold is one of the most taking physical specimens on the Irish national hunt scene at the moment and ever since he first appeared in a bumper in November 2011, we have been eagerly awaiting his chasing career. He has shown plenty of ability as he has learned his trade and won a Navan bumper from the high class Defy Logic before showing well above average ability in novices’ hurdles last season, when he was 2nd to Don Cossack at Navan and Pont Alexandre in a Grade 2 at Leopardstown. He also took the scalp of the high class Morning Assembly at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting and ended the season with a rating of 135.
He now starts off over fences in this Beginners’ Chase over 2m4f and it will be disappointing if he does not prove to be one of the better novices in Ireland this season. This is quite a tough introduction, but Henry De Bromhead can be relied upon to produce him fit for his seasonal debut and his novices are always exceptionally well schooled. We are happy to back Sizing Gold in this and hopefully he will put in a display that will mark him down as a contender for some of the big novice chase prizes over the coming months.
