Dragon to fire at Cork

Our Ray Flanagan has half a dozen selections on a busy Easter Saturday.

An exciting week of Horse Racing ahead of us with Fairyhouse and Aintree including two Grand Nationals, and to whet our appetites, I have six selections from this Saturday’s cards at Cork, Haydock and Kempton.

Cork 3.55 – Dragon Khan

Dragon Khan has demonstrated previously an ability to both handle testing ground and run well fresh , so on the basis of those two criteria he ought to hold a chance today in this tough seven furlong handicap. He was unlucky to be just edged out in a similar race at Gowran around this time last year and he has displayed enough overall to suggest he can win a race of his current mark. Dropping back to seven furlongs hopefully Berry will position him closer to the pace than in some instances in his previous races, and a positive ride could be the key.

Cork 4.30 – Altesse

An interesting renewal of today’s feature The Noblesse Stakes. Altesse has not encountered this type of a surface before, but as a half-sister to Albert Bridge there are grounds for optimism she will handle it. In four races last season stamina appeared to be his forte and there remains the possibility she will make further progress this term. Again, positive tactics could be the key with the daughter of Hernando’s staying ability taken to earn her the spoils.

Cork 5.00 – Pyromaniac

Pyromainiac is a consistent type with a turn of foot. He receives plenty of weight from a couple of the classier types in News at Six and Defining Year and his ability to quicken off a slow pace in a small field should stand him in good stead today.

Haydock 2.00 – Ziga Boy

Ziga Boy is a smooth travelling type of horse who shaped with plenty of promise on his latest start at Sandown. I am fairly convinced he is the best horse in this race, it is just a matter of whether his stamina holds out for 3M 4 F. Slightly better ground would be preferable but Haydock is a pretty flat track and he should have every chance provided they do not go too quick early on.

Haydock 3.10 – Astigos

Venetia Williams often hits the target on a Saturday and she has a sound chance here courtesy of Astigos. His penultimate effort at Cheltenham where he split Irish Cavalier and Generous Ransom looks very solid form and a similar performance should give him every chance.

Kempton 3.25 – Regulation

Formerly a useful sort for Michael Halford in Ireland, Regulation has struggled somewhat since moving to Neil King. However in my view, there were mitigating factors last season with the horse running over either the wrong distance or unsuitable soft ground. On the only occasion he encountered his preferred conditions he shaped quite well in Ascot’s Hunt Cup. I was quite pleased with his recent seasonal bow at Lingfield and he is definitely overpriced today.
