Hold the Fort at Kilbeggan

Ray Flanagan offers his Sunday selections from Kilbeggan and Listowel.

A solid pick from Kilbeggan along with a few more speculative picks at Listowel make up this Sunday’s selections.

Kilbeggan 2.50- Fort Smith,

Fort Smith has competed pretty well in both handicap and novice company previously, although it is fair to say he has proved somewhat frustrating overall, always finding one or two a little strong for him. His placed efforts though against the likes of Windsor Park and Sort It Out make him the clear form choice and I always believe that these types of consistent horses who keep getting placed will eventually get their race. Gordon Elliot may have found a suitable opening here and he should make a bold bid.

Listowel 4.40-Yes I Am and Princess Glamour

Yes I Am should certainly not lack for race fitness anyway given that he has six runs under his belt already this season. He looked a definite future winner when third behind Princess Aloof at Leopardstown in early April and despite a few disappointments since, he shaped with a limited degree of encouragement at Naas last time having been poorly positioned throughout. From a berth of stall two he should be more optimally positioned from an early stage today and that might make the difference.

Princess Glamour has good previous form on deep ground. She got the job done nicely on heavy ground at Navan last back-end and shaped as if there could be more to come when running a fair race on her seasonal bow behind Bobby Jean at The Curragh. She will handle the forecast deep ground better than the majority of  the field and that makes her dangerous.

Listowel 5.10- My Painter,

The unlucky defeat of My Painter at The Curragh on his penultimate outing certainly raised a few eyebrows, with the subsequent thirteen pounds rise somewhat harsh for connections. At any rate, the son of Jeremy struggled off the revised mark at Dundalk, but he might be worth another chance reverting to heavy ground conditions similar to what prevailed at The Curragh. For a horse who has had leg trouble, he may be happier racing on soft ground than the sand on the polytrack which could place more strain on his legs. Stylish young apprentice Jack Kennedy claims a valuable ten pounds and he looks the value option in the line up.
