Martin is a Man with a Plan on Friday

Ray Flanagan previews Friday’s racing at Galway.

Headline pick Diakali unfortunately flopped on us yesterday, but Quick Jack ensured we still made a nice profit on the contest.

Day 5 of the Galway festival and after Quick Jack opened his account yesterday perhaps Tony Martin can get a few more on the board. Half a dozen selections, four of which are housed by the Co Meath handler.

Galway 5.00-Mr Diablo and The Plan Man

Some really strongly contest handicap hurdles at Galway this week and here is another one to commence Friday’s card. Mr Diablo is a good ground horse and it may be worth chancing that he can recapture his best form returning from a four month break. His effort at Leopardstown over Christmas was very good, runner0-up to Shemshal with the subsequent Boyle Sports runner-up and Monday evening winner Modem back in third. As stated he was twice a winner of bumpers on good ground and could have a chance in a wide open race.

Galway 6.50- Artful Artist and Golden Spear,

A twin-pronged attack from Tony Martin.

Artful Artist won the corresponding race 12 months ago and if back in the same form has good prospects of a repeat victory. Following on from the Ballybrit success he went on to run very well in a good 12 furlong handicap at The Curragh before shaping much better than his placing suggested in the November Handicap. He has just the one outing under his belt this term but has decent prospects if that run has brought his fitness to the necessary level.

Stablemate Golden Spear is feared. While admittedly he enjoyed a ground saving trip at The Curragh on his penultimate start, he still looked an unlucky loser after encountering trouble in running in a few occasions in the home straight. His next effort can probably be excused and he is not without a chance.

Galway 8.00- Tudor Lady and Maknificent

A surprisingly very short price, but it is possible that Tudor Lady will drift out somewhat through the day. Tony Martin’s filly has a nice pedigree and is the daughter of She’s Our Mare who was a wonderfully versatile mare over a decade ago winning races over a variety of distances. Tudor shaped pleasingly despite running green at Bellewstown last time and people obviously feel she is better than her rating.

Maknificent was a big eye-catcher for me in two of her races this season and she was unlucky to break blood vessels at Ballinrobe last time. She is a big price if the problem does not reoccur this evening.
