Tullius tough to beat in today’s centrepiece

Steve Hughes has selections from Salisbury and Beverley on Thursday

With four of the five British meetings in the South of the country, all are vulnerable to the forecast bad weather expected on Thursday. However my selection for the featured Group 3 race at Salisbury should be fine whatever the ground conditions. I also have a selection from Beverley where the rain should not reach by race time. Both each-way selections were second on Wednesday, Modernism (advised 6/1) and Commodore (sp 10/1)

Beverley 2.00: Yourholidayisover

I don’t normally look too closely at lowly selling contests but will make an exception today with Yourholidayisover looking in the sort of form to get his head in front for the first time at the 16th attempt on the flat.

He has won over hurdles in the past and has come close on a few occasions this term. Second at Newcastle in May, he clearly copes well with a stiff track (his hurdles win coming at Carlisle). A series of modest efforts followed by can be explained by being run over the wrong trip, or tracks too sharp for him.

He confirmed his general wellbeing when third on soft ground in a similar contest to today over this course and distance, only beaten 2l and this race looks weaker. The hood employed that day is retained and he can finally land a maiden flat race win here.

Salisbury 4.25: Tullius

This contest will be shaped to a large extent by ground conditions – it seems certain there will be at least some rain by race time, but potentially the going could be pretty soft if the potential for thunderstorms is realised. However Tullius should be a formidable rival whatever ground conditions are.

The 7yo has been campaigned for some time at the top level and has never proved up to group 1 class and although I suspect he is best with cut in the ground, he had no problem with good-to-firm at York last time when winning a Group 2 over 10f.

He had seemed to be struggling for his best form up until then but that run showed he retains all his old ability and this stiff mile should play to his strengths as until that York win he had seemed to be a specialist at this distance – indeed he won this very race back in 2012. A strong pace would help him too as he likes to come from off the pace and assuming Mustadeem turns up he looks likely to set his customary strong gallop which would be very helpful.

Recommended bets:

1pt win – Yourholidayisover – Beverley 2.00 – 5/1 Skybet

1pt each-way – Tullius – Salisbury 4.25 – 8/1 Ladbrokes
