Winter to catch them cold

Steve Hughes has selections for two middle distance handicaps on Tuesday

After a very late start to their 2015 calendar, Yarmouth are already into their premier meeting of the season, a three day fixture starting today. I have a selection from the featured event, a small but select field of 3yo’s in a 12f handicap and have a tip too from a similar, if slightly lower grade event at Chepstow.

Yarmouth 3.50: Winter Serenade

I always look for front runners on the flat track at Yarmouth, especially when there is a small field lining up and Winter Serenade should fit the bill nicely in today’s feature contest.

The filly made a promising enough debut over 10f at Ascot in May when fifth to French Dressing, but has built splendidly on that by winning both her starts since. That began with a win in a maiden at Kempton, today’s rival Captain Navarre back in third.

She then successfully made the running in a four runner race at Leicester last time, seeing out the 12f strongly and holding off Chapel Choir by about a length. We have not seen her since so she whilst the form of that Leicester run does not add up to a great deal, the fact she is comfortable leading from the off could count for a lot when there is likely to be little competition for the early lead and where front-runners can prove tough to pass.

Chepstow 4.40: Desdichado

Ralph Beckett suffered the devastation at the weekend of losing a second Group 1 prize in the space of a month in the stewards room and whilst victory in a class 4 handicap at Chepstow will be small recompense, Desdichado can at least put a smile back on his face.

The colt looked clueless on his debut at Windsor in July but did at least stay on into mid-division late on over 10f on good ground. His next race took him to Ffos Las where bottomless conditions prevailed and the 3yo really revelled in the heavy going, seeing out the 10f better than the rest to wear down Mr Quicksilver.

It took him nearly the whole trip to get in front that day so an extra 2f should be no inconvenience to him today. This son of Pivotal will get more very soft ground today and despite his inexperience he looks the class of the field and the extra know how from that last win will stand him in good stead today against more senior opponents.

Recommended bets:

1pt win – Winter Serenade – 3.50 Yarmouth – 9/2 general

1pt win – Desdichado – 4.40 Chepstow – 13/8 general
