Steve Hughes has selections from both the Fillies listed stakes at Lingfield on Thursday.
Plenty of racing to choose from on Thursday but I am concentrating on the two big races on Lingfield’s afternoon card. Both are at listed level for fillies only and two horses very much proven on an artificial surface are preferred.
Lingfield 2.20: Desert Snow
Godolphin horses have an excellent strike rate on the All Weather in recent seasons and Desert Snow is capable of improving an already impressive 3-4 strike rate on sand.
Indeed the only horse that has beaten Desert Snow on an artifical surface is the to class The Corsican at Kempton. Other than that the filly beat Rocket Ship almost 5l to win her maiden at the same track, won a class 3 handicap at Wolverhampton over 12f and then followed up with ease on her one attempt at beyond that trip (at 2m) back at Kempton.
She has had a relatively light campaign on turf so far, which should mean she is nice and sharp for today. She has twice been placed at listed level, including a fine second at Newmarket last month, albeit 8l behind the runaway winner Journey, so narrowly defeated since on Champions Day at Ascot.
Lingfield 3.20: Lamar
Having had an excellent season on the All Weather last winter, Lamar took on some top class horses on grass during the spring, but was not up to the task. Refreshed for a summer break, she should be back up to speed for another potentially lucrative winter campaign and she could go one place better than her second in this race last year.
Lamar came into that race as an unconsidered 20/1 shot having never run on an artificial surface previously. Significantly she had the exact same preparation as this year, running at Royal Ascot before being given four months off until this contest. She chased home Tearless last season in a race every bit as competitive as today and then went on to be very consistent during the winter.
She won a couple of conditions stakes at Wolverhampton and Chelmsford but achieved more in defeat when beaten by the shortest of margins over 10f in the Winter Derby Trial and then showed her versatility when filling the same position over 7f in the Fillies & Mares race on All Weather Champions day here in April. Form of the same level today will surely be enough to at least make the frame.
