Steve Hughes has two selections for Tuesday
It is back to work for many today, but the racing continues so there are still winners to be found. I have a tip for the opener at Bangor and the finale at Newcastle. Dawson City was placed for the each-way bet yesterday (advised 15/2).
Bangor 1.15: Cabragh
Having selected him at Catterick last week, only for the meeting to be abandoned at the last minute, I am happy to stick with Cabragh with him re-routed to Bangor on Dee today.
Handicapped on a group of four 2m novice hurdles where he was beaten out of sight, he showed where his talents lay when winning a 3m2f chase at Sedgefield last month – his first run in a handicap, first try at 3m or beyond and his first chase.
That run proved his handicap mark of 92 to be woefully inadequate and as such trainer Sam England tried to nick a race under a penalty at Newcastle the following week. However that race was only over 2m4f and he just lacked the speed to reach winner Maxed Out King. He is back up to 3m today and still looks well in off 105 – his trainer is in red-hot form with a 3-4 record over the Christmas period.
Newcastle 5.10: Poyle Vinnie
Without a win since the Scottish Stewards Cup in July 2015, Poyle Vinnie looks back on a winning mark and is certainly in the form to capitalise based on his run over course and distance last week.
Largely out of form on turf, bar a couple of good runs at Chester, Poyle Vinnie dropped back to his last winning mark of 95 for the first time on his return to sand at Lingfield in November. Outpaced there over 5f, he was only beaten 1l over the same trip when apparently suited by the straight track here next time.
He looked all over the winner approaching the final furlong over 6f in a class 2 last week, only to find the classy Azamour a neck too good late on. He kept on pleasingly nevertheless and he will surely earn a hike in the ratings for that run when he is re-assessed this week. That means this race comes at a good time as he can race off 94 again and this looks a slightly lesser contest.
1pt win – Cabragh – 1.15 Bangor – 4/1 general
1.5pts win – Poyle Vinnie – 5.10 Newcastle – 13/8 BetVictor, Coral
