Ray Flanagan with Sunday selections
A break from betting may no harm for a while after today.
Katiymann started the season nicely with an emphatic win at Leopardstown but has been a little disappointing on his two subsequent starts. Remains relatively unexposed though and shrewd stable could have him primed for today. Handles soft conditions and might be ridden more prominently which could help this horse who stays further than 7 furlongs.
Galway 5.00- Attribution
Strong form throughout the winter at graded level and interesting on handicap debut this afternoon. Warmed up with win over decent yardstick at Limerick and may be able to concede the weight.
Galway 5.30- Dara Tango
No spring chicken but looks feasibly handicapped on pick of his old hurdling form. Plenty to like about his latest run at Leopardstown following a long absence and looks the safest choice here.
Galway V Tipperary Hurling-Man of Match- Joe Canning,
An absorbing game in prospect with the unusual scenario of Galway being slight favourites against the reigning champions. Tipperary continue to have by far the most potent attacking unit in the country and no doubt will fancy their chances, yet the feeling is that it is now or never for Galway who are putting in a supreme effort this year.
I think this savage determination may get Galway over the line and central to their chance could well be their star man Joe Canning. Canning has not been prolific on the scoring charts yet this season as he is operating in a new playmaker role around midfield but he remains the key man
The temptation must be there to switch him further forward tomorrow at least for periods in the game. Tipperary’s weak spot is their full back line and it makes sense for Galway to put their best player in the area where the opposition are at their weakest. Canning should also be remembering the semi final 12 months ago where a ferocious hit from Maher ended his involvement and indeed put him on the sidelines for 7 months. That hit was the single biggest reason why Tipperary went on to claim the title last year and Canning I am sure has been waiting patiently for the past year for retribution.
He is likely to be a man possessed today and I select him to deliver a man of the match winning performance.
Daithi Burke may also be worth a small interest. Commentators will be drawn to the contest tomorrow between the best full back in hurling Burke against the best full-forward Callanan. Callanan is the key man really for Tipperary and if Burke contains him sufficiently there is no doubt the pundits will give him strong consideration for the award.
