Steve Hughes looks ahead to the best of Tuesday’s racing
A sprint on the flat and a staying hurdle form the basis of today’s selections.
Wolverhampton 1.10: Landing Night
Having apparently solved his tendency to miss the break, Landing Night has been making solid progress this season, not only on turf, but also on the sand where he acts well. He can make the most of a useful draw to score here.
A winner on fast ground at Musselburgh in September, he was then well beaten on ground far too soft for him at Chester. However he has gone really well since being switched back to an artificial surface. He won with apparently plenty to spare at Newcastle from a mark of 77 under today’s pilot PJ McDonald.
He then ran a cracker to chase home the progressive Alsvinder here and was arguably given too much to do when only fifth at Newcastle last time. That was a far tougher race than today’s anyway and with McDonald back on board and an ideal stall in two, he should be the one to beat.
Southwell 1.50: Tara View
There is no getting away from the fact that Tara View ran dismally on her reappearance at Wincanton last month. However she might well have been unsuited by the rain softened ground and might appreciate the return to good going – conditions on which she is fully proven.
She showed a high level of form last season, mainly against her fellow fillies. Having been well beaten in two tough bumpers, she made no mistake on her third start, winning by 7l on fast ground at Bangor. She then took that form into the hurdling sphere.
She won three out of three at Ludlow, a sharp, flat track like the one she faces today. She was then a very solid fourth in the mares final at Newbury on her final start of last term – and the way she ran on at the finish suggested she needed further than that 2m4f. She was tailed off by halfway at Wincanton, but presumably there was nothing too amiss as she is ready to go again just a month later. I am expecting the longer trip and faster going to bring her back to her best.
1pt win – Landing Night – 1.10 Wolverhampton – 9/4 general
1pt each-way – Tara View – 1.50 Southwell – 8/1 general
