Steve Hughes has early and late selections on Thursday
Plenty of jump racing on offer on Thursday, but with generally small fields it was hard to find a decent bet. I have decided on the opening contest at Leicester, but also have an each-way bet on Chelmsford’s floodlit card. Headline selection Audacious Plan gave us a winner yesterday (SP 5/2)
Leicester 12.40: Doctor Haze
With some rain forecast in the morning, conditions should get more testing at Leicester and that should suit Doctor Haze far more than his main market rivals.
He shaped very well on heavy going at Chepstow last month, his first start under rules. He kept on gamely that day over this 2m trip and whilst he was no match for Marley Firth, he showed there will be races to be won with him.
He won a point over 2m4f last season, and no doubt his future will lie over longer distances, however Leicester is a nice stiff track and the rain will turn this into more of a stamina test. There are three other horses priced at under 10/1 but all are unproven on soft going.
Chelmsford 6.30: Cappananty Con
A consistent gelding on sand, Cappananty Con has made the first two on seven of his twelve starts on an artificial surface (including two wins). He just about stays this 6f trip, but will stay it better on this tighter track and fastest of all the All Weather tracks.
He used the sharp track at Wolverhampton to great effect in July to land his first handicap win from a mark just 2lbs lower than today. His two races since have been at Kempton, a track that places more of an emphasis on stamina with its longer finishing straight.
He was not disgraced on either occasion and tried to make all last time, only to fade in the final furlong. Hopefully he will be ridden with slightly more restraint today, but this track does favour prominent racers and an each-way wager looks appropriate.
1pt win – Doctor Haze – 12.40 Leicester – 100/30 Bet365
0.75pts each-way – Cappananty Con – 6.30 Chelmsford – 9/1 William Hill
