Steve Hughes has two bets for the only remaining jumps fixture on Monday.
With cold weather scuppering Musselburgh’s card and threatening Southwell, I have gone to Fontwell for both of today’s bets.
Fontwell 2.15: Ramses de Teillee
Having apparently reached his limit over hurdles, Ramses de Teillee was a revelation on his chasing debut at Chepstow last month and can defy an understandable 15lb rise in the weights today.
He was consistent without being a world beater over hurdles, a sixth place in the EBF final at Sandown was a fair indicator of his ability. He was not especially fancied at Chepstow, but apart from one blunder three out, when the race was virtually in the bag, he jumped impeccably for that chasing bow and ultimately came home 17l clear of Baron du Plessis.
That race was on heavy going and with conditions expected to be almost as testing today, he will have no problem with ground conditions here. He does have his fair share of weight, but he is the one improver in the field against some rivals who have seen better days.
Fontwell 3.40: Llantara
Fontwell’s cards invariably finish with a low grade hurdle and this race is no exception – giving an ideal opportunity for Llantara to gain a first success.
She caught my eye when third on only her third hurdles start at Exeter back in February as a likely improver. That promise did not immediately translate to handicap company as she was pulled up on her next start at Warwick. There was every chance though that she failed to stay 2m5f.
Any thoughts she might not be able to handle heavy going though were dispelled when she finished a fine second on her return to the track at Chepstow last month. A first time tongue strap might well have helped, and that item is used again today. Trained Tom Symonds’ team is in good form at present and against some very modest opponents she looks the solid option.
1.5pts win – Ramses de Teillee – 2.15 Fontwell – 11/8 general
1pt win – Llantara – 3.40 Fontwell – 4/1 general
