Feeling Sparky at Leopardstown

Ray Flanagan with St Stephens Day selections

Thought for the day: Punters will often ask what is the best bet to do. For the bigger punters it has to be selective single bets.

For smaller players like myself though, my idea of the best bet is looking at three races and picking two horses from each race.

For a stake of €20 you can have 8 * €2.50 trebles giving you a chance of a decent return if you can find the winners of the three races.

You will not find enough winners with only one selection in a race, with two selections you have some chance.

Anyway a few picks for today.

Limerick 1.05- Ex Patriot

Big price here judging on pick of his efforts which included a good fourth in the Triumph Hurdle. Not far behind Jezki last time and should be primed for a bold showing this afternoon.

Leopardstown 1.50- Sparky Stowaway

Ordinary event for a Stephens Day card at Leopardstown but this is the type of race that you may get some value. Sparky Stowaway representing Thomas Mullins pictured showed mild promise in bumpers last spring and shaped with promise under tender handling on both recent efforts. Bigger field and slight drop in distance may aid cause today and capable of going well at a price.

Leopardstown 2.55- Calino Dairy

Landofhopeandglory may prove a blot on the handicap but is short enough for such an inexperienced horse. Calino Dairy in contrast may be a little too high in the weights, but is a bold front running quick jumper who could stretch them from the front and give supporters a good spin. Beat the subsequent Troytown Chase runner-up at Galway and will be sharper following  six weeks break having got tired last time.

Wincanton-1.30-Boite

Boite has often performed best when fresh or relatively fresh as applies in this case with just one spin on the flat in recent months. No form of substance over this trip yet but has always looked like a staying type so well worth another go. Decent effort when last over hurdles at Ayr and capable of a good showing today.

Wetherby 2.10- Aloomomo

Promising young horse a couple of seasons ago where he hacked up at Newbury. Injury problems since but gradually nursed back by Warren Greatrix and potentially interesting today off a light weight.

Kempton 3.40- Midnight Maestro

Promising reappearance behind Elgin at Ascot prior to losing all chance with first flight blunder next time. Bit of a quirky type but has a staying pedigree and likely he is on a good mark if jumping more fluently.
