Ray Flanagan with Saturday selections
Thought for the day: Did anyone consider the bounce factor with Faugheen yesterday??
Minds Eye (4-1 sp) was a winner yesterday. A few selections for an interest this Saturday, a pretty quiet Saturday following the busy Christmas period.
Newbury 1.50- TheLigny
Theligny won a strong enough renewal of this race 12 months ago and might be worth chancing albeit acknowledging that he is nowhere near as well weighted this time around.
He shaped like a strong stayer in his victory last year and the emphasis on stamina should suit today.
He has only raced on good to soft but I have no concerns for heavy ground as he is a half brother to a couple of solid French horses who have only ever raced on testing conditions.
The obvious concern is his lack of current form but that is factored into the price and he might be able to grind them into submission if he can find his best form.
Newbury 2.25- Knockanrawley and Potters Legend
Stamina is likely to be at a premium in these conditions and Knockanrawley looks the safest bet on that front given that he was second in the Eider Chase over 4 Miles last season. His previous Cheltenham fourth to Sausalito Sunrise also appears just about the best form on offer and he should take a bit of beating.
Potters Legend caught my eye at Chepstow in October and ran a fair race most recently in the Hennessey also. Needs to be ridden slightly more conservatively here to get home but chance in this easier contest.
Although a winner over 3M4F at Downpatrick, Federici has not struck me as an out and out stayer since moving to Donald McCain. Ran a fine race in the Becher Chase last time and drop back to 2M 4F could pay dividends under testing conditions today.
Lingfield 2.55- Top Beak and Barye
Top Beak appeals off an attractive mark compared to what he was racing off on turf early last summer. Seems to handle polytrack quite well too and was a big eye-catcher over the course and distance recently finishing strongly having not been put in the race.
Weighted to win.
Barye could be the biggest threat . He has also competed off higher ratings in the past and goes well on this circuit. Has had a few runs since returning from a break and likely to bounce back at some point.
