Thought for the day: Whatever about horses, My main aim for 2018 has to be to find a woman. It could be a lonely life without one!
Happy New Year!
Summary of 2017- I had not been keeping any record this year so decided to spend two hours the other day and review the selections for the year. It made interesting or, whatever way you look at it, alarming viewing.
January-Loss 15 points ( poor start to year-just the two winners – Cogry and Fanciful Angel)
February–Profit 5 points (Hanging in there this month)
March– Loss 3 points ( was unable to find any magic this Cheltenham. They are tricky.)
April –Profit 12 points ( started well this month but was unable to keep it going- story of my life!)
May– Loss 22 points ( Finding it hard to adjust to new flat season and struggling to interpret the form)
June– Loss- 39 points (need help!!)
July–Profit-19 points ( El Hayem and Ulysses plus Brendan Grace’s 62 at the British Open stopped the rot.)
August- Loss 32 points ( nightmare punting week at Galway for the second year in a row. Now at a loss of 74 points for the year-scary)
September-Profit- 14 points-( Brorocco, Who Dares Wins and Potters Point (Kerry National) were three good winners and a few good each way placings including Harlequeen at Chester and Chelsea Lad in the Cambridgeshire)
October- Profit -58 points ( Found a bit of form- Withhold in the Cesarewitch and Wonder Leish in the October Handicap were the highlights along with Persuasive at Ascot plus Rhododendron and Intimation in France)
November- Profit- 16 points (Fair month- Had a 1-2 in the Troytown chase. A few other good placings but need winners)
December-Profit- 18 points ( Two good Christmas winners- Sparky Stowaway and Anibale Fly in the Paddy Power Chase.)
Overall Result for Year- Profit 32 Points-Well down on previous two years and was very poor selecting for the first eight months of the year with a busy new job my only excuse. At least has got better in the final four months of the year so hopefully can maintain that improvement going forward to the new year.
I have often seen much better racing for betting on a New Years Day. We have very small competitive fields and tight markets this time . A few for a small interest though.
While no one can ever question the genius of Dermot Weld, it may be reasonable to suggest that he never really got the best out of Silver Concorde particularly over hurdles. The former festival bumper winner though appears to have gained a new lease of life since joining Keith Dalgleish.
This is a much tougher assignment than the two small races he has won in recent weeks, but if in similar form I expect him to cope with the rise I class and have too many gears for today’s opposition.
1.5 pts win-Silver Concorde-2.15 Musselburgh-2-1 General
0.5 pts win-Burtons Well-2.00 Cheltenham-4-1 General
0.5 pts win double- Vyta De Roc-12.50 and Colin’s Sister 3.10 Cheltenham- 9-1 Double combined
