Steve Hughes previews Friday evening’s fixture at Kempton.
With weather threatening the jumps fixtures on Friday, I am happy to concentrate on a competitive All Weather card at Kempton under the lights. Influent was a winner yesterday (advised 100/30).
Kempton 7.45: Boychick
A model of consistency during 2017, Boychick can overcome a recent break and make a winning start to 2018.
The 5yo has an admirable record of making the first three in all bar one of his last ten races. The majority of those have come on a synthetic surface which he clearly handles very well. He placed second on both starts at this track last season.
He finished 2017 on a high note at the end of July when scoring at Windsor, but having been on the go for quite a while it made sense to give him a break and bring him back for the All Weather this winter. Encouragingly he won first time out in 2017 after a similar break so hopefully the lack of a recent run won’t be an issue.
Kempton 8.15: Born to Finish
Born to Finish has been in excellent form on sand this winter and looks to be still on the improve. He has been running well at all the tracks, but as a hold up horse Kempton is probably the one to suit him best.
Indeed his only win this campaign came at this course in November when his normal hold up tactics were employed and the long straight was used to good effect as he weaved his way through the field to hit the front late on. Despite placing on his last two starts at Chelmsford, those tactics are not seen to best effect on that sharper track.
Back at Kempton he still looks feasibly handicapped having gone up just a pound for those last two runs and although he has a wide draw to overcome, the fact he is usually dropped in means that should be less of an issue.
