Ray Flanagan with Meydan selections
Thought for the day: Often first thoughts can be the best-I was going for Wholestone and Sir Cheuvalin on Sunday night but changed my mind on Monday morning.
I hope to take at least a passing interest in the Meydan Carnival this winter. The official carnival is not starting until next week but a few interesting handicaps at today’s event.
Meydan-4.50- Rio Tigre
Have monitored this horse at previous Carnivals where he has ran a few good races albeit over longer distances. Appeared not to get home though in two recent races and perhaps the drop in distance can work today . Likely to race more prominently back in trip and handicapped to go close on pick of best efforts.
Meydan 5.25- Pit Stop and Secret Trade
Both these horses caught the eye finishing third and sixth in the same race a few weeks ago. Pit Stop, a former Michael Halford inmate, has not progressed as initially expected in his younger days but he impressed making up stealthy late headway in that race indicating his turn is near.
Secret Trade had no chance whatsoever the way the race panned out that day but was noted also making late headway. He had won impressively on previous start so clearly handles this track. Looks worth backing also at decent odds.
Meydan 6.00- Sahaafy
Shot in the dark here with Sahaafy, another horse who has come down the weights from his prime. Was useful handicapper in the UK for Barry Hills a couple of seasons ago and he went to contest a strong handicap won by Carry On Derrick at the 2016 Carnival.
Limited impact on two recent starts over 6 furlongs for latest trainer Maria Ritchie but could be different proposition back on turf with De Sousa booked.
