Steve Hughes has two fancies for Wednesday
Ludlow provides the jumping action on Wednesday, where the highlight is a chase sponsored by local trainer Henry Daly. He has a runner in the race, but I will be opposing him. However best bet looks to be on the sand at Kempton in the evening.
Ludlow 3.00: Nansaroy
I am very hopeful that the return of cheekpieces and a switch back to racing right-handed will see Nansaroy leave his recent form well behind.
The 8yo won two of his first the starts, a bumper and novice hurdle, but has not tasted victory since. However the closest he has come was his two runs on right-handed tracks over fences last season. He was second to the progressive Final Nudge at Hereford, before finishing in the same spot at this track behind Marcilhac on similar going to today.
On both occasions cheekpieces were sported as well. They have been conspicuous by their absence in three outings this season, all on left-handed tracks, where he has shown a slight tendency to jump out to his right. I am sure he will be better suited going right and should be sharpened up by the return of the headgear. Of course those three modest runs have seen his handicap mark drop to a career low in the meantime.
Kempton 5.45: Deeleys Double
Deeleys Double has shaped pretty well on both starts since joining Mark Loughnane and ought to be at his peak for this run at Kempton.
He raced at around a mile for his previous yard, but has shaped as if this 11f distance is about his optimum in 2017. Fourth here over a mile last winter, he ran two cracking races in huge fields at Doncaster over 10f – once on the opening day of the turf season, the other in the autumn on his first start for Loughnane.
On both occasions he finished off strongly on that galloping track, suggesting he needed every yard of that distance and more. He tried 12f at Wolverhampton, but tried to make all, only to fade into fourth late on. Perhaps slightly more patient tactics over a furlong less will be ideal. It looks significant that there has been market support for him last night.
