Steve Hughes has two picks for Sunday’s racing
Although Newcastle has been frozen out there are still two meetings in Britain today as Chelmsford have put on an extra fixture to join Fontwell. I have a selection from each meeting.
Fontwell 1.40: Native Robin
On a disappointing card quantity wise, Native Robin looks the best bet on the Fontwell card.
A horse primarily kept to good going in the past, he was a decisive winner on heavy going at Warwick on New Years Eve, adding another dimension to his CV. Having missed the 16/17 season through injury, that was his third run back from his absence and he is obviously now back to full fitness.
He is up 6lbs today but that only takes him back to the mark he won off at the end of the 15/16 season when winning at Wincanton, again over today’s distance. Trainer Jeremy Scott has been enjoying a real purple patch in the last month or so and in a race full of inconsistent characters, he looks the most reliable option.
Chelmsford 3.55: Come on Dave
An absolute speedball – if there were 4f races then Come on Dave would be a high class horse, I think he will enjoy a tactical advantage on a track favouring front runners.
He comes into this race in form having won a similar contest at Lingfield last time out. That was almost two months ago, but he does have a good record fresh so the absence is no great cause for concern.
A big factor here is that much of his opposition are hold up horses that can be slowly away, so I would expect to see Come on Dave out in front early. Jockey Liam Keniry might even be able to get a breather into him around the bend to help preserve his suspect stamina for the finishing push.
1pt win – Native Robin – 1.40 Fontwell – 5/2 Paddy Power
1pt win – Come on Dave – 3.55 Chelmsford – 5/1 general
