Hill will enjoy flat track

Steve Hughes has two selections for Kempton’s jumps fixture on Friday

Kempton stages a relatively low key meeting on Friday but there is a good highlight, a 3m chase in which the nap selection runs. We kept up our winning run through Gunfleet (advised 11/4) on Thursday.

Kempton 3.00: Broken Quest

The application of a first-time tongue-strap, plus a move to a flatter track seemed the key to the big improvement of Broken Quest last time and he can follow up his Huntingdon win of two weeks ago here in a race with plenty of quantity but not much quality.

Broken Quest did win a 3m point in Ireland last season, but his early form under rules was modest for David Dennis. He was a fair fourth at Worcester in the summer, but was then put away. He returned by racing twice at Exeter where he soon faded on both occasions turning for home.

However for his handicap debut he was switched to the sharp right-handed track at Huntingdon and fitted with a tongue-strap. The transformation was huge as the 6yo was in front some way from home, but kept galloping all the way to the line. Over just a furlong further here and on a track with a very similar configuration, there is every reason to think he will be just as good today.

Kempton 3.30: Brandon Hill

Selected in this column for his last race, over the same course and distance, Brandon Hill came a brave but beaten third. However in hindsight that looks a pretty good race now and a repeat of that effort could be good enough here.

The winner that day Tintern Theatre was running a fine race in the Peter Marsh when coming down late on whilst the fourth home Holly Bush Henry has since won at Fakenham and was a brilliant second in a valuable prize at Sandown last weekend. Brandon Hill has been lightly raced over fences but boasts a fine record under rules with two wins and two placed efforts from six starts.

Front-running tactics have proved successful and this flat track ought to suit him. Much will depend on the first few furlongs and whether he get to the front and dictate early. If Adrian Heskin can get him there he should take some passing having been kept to the 133 mark he started the season from and run two fine races in defeat since.

Recommended bets:

1pt win – Broken Quest – 3.00 Kempton – 4/1 general

1pt win – Brandon Hill – 3.30 Kempton – 5/2 general
