Steve Hughes goes to Wincanton for two selections.
A welcome competitive card over jumps at Wincanton today, so I am happy to concentrate on the Somerset track for two races.
Wincanton 3.10: Two Smokin Barrels
A mare I have been following for much of the season, Two Smokin Barrels has been competitive all winter and gain due reward at Wincanton this afternoon.
The 9yo has been in peak form of late, finishing a strong third in a good Newbury handicap before only just being touched off by Tara Mist at Leicester. Despite those fine runs she is actually a pound lower in the handicap so is being given a chance by the assessor.
She goes well on flat tracks having won no less than three times at Wetherby in the past, so this track should be to her liking and she goes well on soft ground.
Wincanton 3.45: Jurby
There was an excuse for Jurby being pulled up last time out (he burst a blood vessel), so despite the poor form figure last time out, it looks well worth giving him another chance in this weak looking novice.
Prior to that disappointment he had run two fine races over hurdles, chasing home a very useful prospect in Dr Des at Stratford before going one place better and winning over this course and distance in January on testing going. He had also been a useful bumper horse before injury intervened.
This is not a hot contest as the Nicholls runner Choix des Armes pulls far too hard and Storm Home won a very weak race at Taunton last time. Jurby would only need to repeat his earlier form to win this.
