Steve Hughes looks ahead to the best of Sunday’s racing
There are competitive cards on offer today despite the proximity to Cheltenham. I have selections for the best race on each of the two remaining cards at Warwick and Market Rasen.
Warwick 3.55: Talk of the South
Talk of the South is building up an excellent track record at Warwick and can follow up a win here last month.
His course record now reads 222221, that sequence of seconds finally ended by a comfortable win over 3m1f on good-to-soft going and proving he has a good enough attitude to get his head in front when it matters. One of those runners-up placings came in this race last year when he came up against a classy stayer in West of the Edge.
That run came from a mark of 115, but he tumbled down the handicap during a moderate spell of form in the autumn so can race off 103 today despite that comfortable win last time. That suggests he ought to still have something in hand, especially off a lowish weight today.
Market Rasen 4.10: Molly Childers
Stuart Edmunds confirmed his string were still in great heart after landing the valuable mares bumper at Sandown yesterday and the same owner/trainer/jockey combination can strike with Molly Childers today.
The mare has not been seen since finishing a highly creditable fourth in one of the hotter mares handicaps of the season at Cheltenham. That had followed a 14l trouncing of the opposition at this track back in November.
Whilst most of her racing has been on ground quicker than today’s conditions, she ran well to be fifth in that same Sandown bumper last term on soft going and she is bred for today’s 3m trip being a half-sister to Thomond who has often run well in marathon handicaps in Ireland and Gusda who was second over 3m at the Punchestown Festival a few years back.
1pt win – Talk of the South – 3.55 Warwick – 7/2 Betfred, Totesport
0.75pts each-way – Molly Childers – 4.10 Market Rasen – 6/1 Betfred, Totesport
