Ray Flanagan with Tuesday Cheltenham selections
thought for the day: My main thought at the start of another Cheltenham is the fear of failure and losing money over the week.
Cheltenham 2.10-Petit Mouchair
Footpad and Saint Calvados are both very exciting chasers while Petit Mouchair was the superior hurdler. There might be a slight possibility that the two exciting front runners would be better served by flatter tracks and they might even cut each others throats out in front.
I am far from confident but am therefore chancing Petit Mouchair. The galloping grey was placed in last years Champion Hurdle and De Bromhead is likely to have him primed for a career best today.
Cheltenham 2.50- Singlefarmpayment and Vintage Clouds
Singlefarmpayment is to my mind the best horse in this race, it is simply a question of whether his jumping holds. He performs better at Cheltenham than anywhere else and crucially has good form on heavy ground going back a few seasons.
Vintage Clouds found things happening too quick for him 12 months ago but he has improved this year and will be ideally suited to a test of stamina.
Cheltenham 3.30- Yorkhill
After a few golden years the standard of hurdlers has dropped and while Beveur Der may win again, he would never have won one Champion not to mind two, a few seasons ago.
Faugheen has possibilities with heavy ground and cheek-pieces both positives, however I feel Yorkhill is the forgotten horse.
A winner at the previous two Festivals he has lost his way over fences recently and hence connections revert to hurdles. Graham Wylie’s charge has a serious engine and if anywhere near his form of the last two years I can see him winning.
Cheltenham 4.45- Mossback and Pylonthepressure
Mossback appears to have the stamina that should be required for this event and has leading form claims after good efforts behind Thyestes winner Monbeg Notorious the last twice.
Pylonthepressure was a horse I earmarked from his younger days although his career has never really taken off.
Always felt he had staying potential though and won nicely at Thurles most recently.
Cheltenham 5.30- Any Second Now and Barney Dwan
Any Second Now has competed well or at least not disgraced himself against top opponents in Ireland namely Footpad, Monalee and Invitation Only. Suspicion the handbrake will be off today going back up in trip and first handicap. Has a touch of class and might give the charismatic Ted Walsh (pictured) his first Cheltenham winner since if I recall correctly, Commanche Court in the Triumph Hurdle.
I want to be with Barney Dwan also, he has winning soft ground form and ran an excellent race at a previous festival( runner-up Pertemps Hurdle) He has that bit of extra stamina too and rates the each-way play of the race.
