Steve Hughes has two jumpers to follow on the Bank Holiday
A typically busy Bank Holiday programme but one to be run in unusually hot weather. The jumps action looks of better quality in Britain today so I am concentrating on those races.
Warwick 3.50: Captain Jack
A horse I have kept an eye on all last season, today could be the right time to row in with Captain Jack.
The 5yo has shown plenty of promise, largely in novice races and especially in the autumn prior to the ground deteriorating. A fifth place at Stratford where he acted well on a tight left-handed circuit was encouraging as was a fast ground third at Hereford.
There was an excuse for his only run to date in a handicap at Ludlow where he was badly hampered at halfway. I think he will be more effective on today’s quicker ground and his current mark of 108 looks more than fair.
Kempton 4.40: Max Ward
An excellent feature race can go the way of previous course winner Max Ward.
His three runs last season were underwhelming although he was second to the very useful Modus on his last start at this track. He has been given a break since though and comes into this race a fresh horse.
He was an emphatic winner in March 2017 of the Cheltenham Festival consolation race here and clearly loves this track. He also has an excellent record on good going and will certainly get fast conditions today. A fast run 2m2f will suit too.
