Steve Hughes has picks from the best of Perth’s Sunday card
Two very good handicap chases on Perth’s card today, where I am going for two horses with past winning course form. We had a good Saturday at Epsom with wins for headline selection Century Dream (advised 7/2) and Aces (advised 8/1).
Perth 2.35: Mystifiable
A comfortable winner at Perth’s big spring Festival last April off a mark of 126, Mystifiable gets identical conditions for today’s race and is able to run off the very same mark today.
A horse with a very fluent jumping style and enthusiastic nature, the presence of top weight Indian Temple, who likes to go from the front, should act as a nice marker for the selection to chase. He is also at his best on right-handed tracks with a record of 351171 (a couple of those lesser efforts coming on unsuitably slow going).
The going is a solid excuse for his performances last term, where he still ran respectably on his last three starts in desperate ground. Prior to that he had looked a danger to all at Chepstow on his favoured good ground before bulldozing the third last. Off this mark he can make the long journey from Fergal O’Brien’s Gloucestershire base worthwhile.
Perth 4.10: Martiloo
An excellent feature race can go to the bottom weight Martiloo in the hope that the mare’s stamina for 3m will last out.
She has excelled on good going the last twice, leaving her winter form way behind. She won by 14l at Ayr and then 7l at Aintree in a race equally as good as today – and on both occasions was being eased down home way before the finish. The snag is that both races were over 2m4f and she has to last an extra half mile today.
However in her favour are the flat track she excels on and good going that will help eke out that potentially suspect stamina. An 8lbs rise for the last win actually looks quite generous of the handicapper and with no weight to carry the call is to keep her onside today.
1.5pts win – Mystifiable – 2.35 Perth – 4/1 general
1pt win – Martiloo – 4.10 Perth – 100/30 William Hill
