Steve Hughes has two picks for Thursday
I have two selections on a busy day of action in the North on Thursday’s
Ripon 3.10: Remember the Days
Having made an impressive start to his new career with Jedd O’Keeffe, I expect Remember the Days to continue his upward curve with victory at Ripon this afternoon.
He won twice for Joseph O’Brien last year, acting well on a sound surface with wins at Dundalk on racecourse debut and then in a handicap at Gowran over this 9 ½ trip. He changed hands in the autumn to join O’Keeffe.
He made an encouraging start when placing fifth at Pontefract on soft going despite having to come wide around the field in the straight. He built considerably on that when storming home on fast ground at Ayr last time and with only an extra 4lbs to carry today could still be ahead of the handicapper.
Haydock 4.00: Harome
Despite a rare off day at Thirsk last time, Harome is a solid sprinter on a pace track and will be competitive at Haydock this afternoon.
This son of Bahamian Bounty is very much at home on fast ground and having failed to stay 6f on his return to the track in 2018 (probably also needed the run) then put in two fine efforts to place second at both Musselburgh and Nottingham last month, both tracks placing an emphasis on early speed.
I am not quite sure why he faded out of contention last time at Thirsk – perhaps he was feeling the effects of a third run in two weeks. He has had a short refresher since and on a track that often rewards pacesetters, especially on fast ground he looks each-way value with a 7lb claimer on board to ease his burden.
1pt win – Remember the Days – 3.10 Ripon – 15/8 general
0.75pts each-way – Harome – 4.00 Haydock – 17/2 Ladbrokes
