Steve Hughes has his best bets from Sunday’s meetings
I have a pick each from the two meetings in Britain today at Goodwood and Nottingham.
Goodwood 3.45: Imphal
Expertly placed to date by trainer Marcus Tregoning, Imphal can resume winning ways after two placed efforts at the start of 2018.
This thorough stayer began life in handicaps off a lowly 57 last summer having never gone the pace in three maidens over 7f. After a narrow defeat in the first of those races he won his next four starts, the last two of which were over today’s 2m trip – a fair effort for a horse who was only three at the time.
Up in class this term, he has had two runs full of promise at Ascot and then here. On both occasions a steady early gallop would not have done him any favours. However with Mancini and Faithful Mount in the field today, I expect a stronger early pace and that will bring Imphal’s proven stamina far more into play.
Nottingham 4.05: Tarboosh
The Dash at Epsom on Derby Day always has its fair share of hard luck stories and this year Tarboosh’s name can be added to that list. In the circumstances he did well to finish tenth and can gain due compensation in this lower grade today.
He was unfortunate to run in the back of another horse at halfway last week and had no conceivable chance thereafter. Nevertheless he was noted making up good ground in the closing stages and that suggests this Paul Midgley sprinter is on his way back after a couple of modest season openers.
This horse benefited massively from a wind op last spring, winning four times later in the year, mainly on fast ground. He is 4lbs higher than his last winning mark, but the evidence of the Epsom run suggests there is still plenty of ability there and Midgley’s horses often take a few runs to come to hand. I think we will see the best of Tarboosh today.
1pt win – Imphal – 3.45 Goodwood – 7/2 general
1.5pt win – Tarboosh – 4.05 Nottingham – 3/1 general
