Steve Hughes waits for Pontefract’s evening card for his Monday bets
Two contrasting selections at Pontefract – a 17f marathon around this stiff track and a 5f sprint.
Pontefract 7.10: Waiting for Richie
Another of the popular stayers series at Pontefract and Waiting for Richie looks made for these marathon races over this testing track.
The 5yo is really only getting going now having finally grown into his large frame and is really beginning to deliver results wise. He produced a career best effort to win on his seasonal return at the Dante meeting at York showing real guts and determination to hold off a whole host of challengers down the straight.
That contest was over 2m and I can only see him improve further for a longer trip and stiffer track. A real fast ground specialist he will get his preferred ground providing the track misses the showers that could just affect the course during the afternoon.
Pontefract 9.10: Dapper Man
A sprinter in-form is always worth following and Dapper Man certainly fits the bill as he bids for a hat-trick in the finale – and fourth win of the turf season.
Well drawn on the inside, he followed up a narrow win at Ripon last month with victory at Hamilton, where he had been well placed having been unpenalised for a success in an apprentice race. He did well at Hamilton to overcome being carried across the track as he made his effort and he relished the still climb to the finish.
As such he should be well suited to this stiff 5f and stable apprentice Ben Sanderson – who did us a good turn with another sprinter of Roger Fell’s last week, takes off 7lbs which in theory means the horse is actually 2lbs well in for that most recent success, despite going up in the ratings.
1pt win – Waiting for Richie – 7.10 Pontefract – 5/2 general
1.5pts win – Dapper Man – 9.10 Pontefract – 11/4 William Hill
