Turn Copper to gold at Newcastle

Steve Hughes has a selection for the big race of the evening on Friday

Newcastle stages the middle of its big three day flat fixture of the year. The traditional highlight is the Gosforth Park Cup and I have an each-way selection.

Newcastle 7.30: Copper Knight

Having dropped back to a very fair mark and appearing to be running nicely into form, Copper Knight looks worth siding with for his in-form trainer Tim Easterby.

This race does mark his All Weather debut but his dam won her only race on an artificial surface. This horse is all about pace really and won back to back handicaps last May at Chester and York, making pretty much all the running in the process.

He struggled to cope with a rising handicap mark and did not look up to listed grade when dabbling in that company. However he has dropped nicely back to a mark 2lbs below his last winning rating and after a moderate first outing of 2018 he showed much more at Musselburgh last time. He ought to be at peak fitness today and a nice middle draw can often be favourable at Newcastle.

Recommended bet:

0.75pts each-way – Copper Knight – 7.30 Newcastle – 8/1 general
