Steve Hughes has a couple of selections for Sandown’s Friday afternoon fixture
A good card at Sandown where field sizes have held up well despite the fast ground. I have selections for two of the handicaps, both partnered by Jamie Spencer.
Sandown 1.20: Justice Lady
This could be a fascinating tactical contest with most of the field hold up horses. That includes the selection Justice Lady, but it can often pay to follow Jamie Spencer in these sort of races.
The mare made an encouraging start for her new stable (sprint specialist Robert Cowell) when fifth at Haydock last month despite looking in need of the run (her first start for two months). She ought to be sharper for that run here.
Encouragingly her record on stiff 5f tracks is excellent, she is 1-1 at Sandown and also has recent wins at Doncaster and Salisbury. That Sandown win saw her come from last to first with a devastating late run and if Spencer can find a clear run in the closing stages I expect Justice Lady to finish off strongly here.
Sandown 4.05: Alternative Fact
In a race where none of the market principals look totally convincing, an each-way play on Alternative Fact might be worthwhile.
He showed good form from race one last season, only narrowly defeated on his racecourse debut at Newmarket in August. He made no mistake next time when an all the way 6l winner at Salisbury.
Since then he has contested class one races and whilst he was well beaten in the two this season, including at Royal Ascot recently, he is clearly well regarded at home. He looks worth a go in handicap company from an opening rating of 98 and he might just have the tactical pace over his rivals at this 10f distance.
1pt win – Justice Lady – 1.20 Sandown – 10/1 Bet365, BetVictor, William Hill
0.5pts each-way – Alternative Fact – 4.05 Sandown – 12/1 general
