Newmarket’s Scenery is hard to beat

Steve Hughes has selections on the middle of three days at Newmarket’s July meeting

There are not the biggest of fields for Newmarket on Friday – even in the handicaps. However the quality is good and I have selections for two of those handicap contests.

Newmarket 3.00: Wissahickon & Beringer

A recent handicap run at York could have a big bearing on this contest. Mark Johnston’s duo that day line up again and look sure to make the running. However as on that day that could serve to set the race up for the first two home that day.

Wissahickon came out on top at York and could well do so again this afternoon. On handicap debut he showed an extremely willing attitude, jockey Rab Havlin having been hard at work throughout the final 2f. There is surely more to come on only his fifth career start and a horse with that level of determination can go far in this toughly contested races.

However the way Beringer travelled throughout that race gives hope for his supporters, especially as he can be backed at an each-way price. He was cantering for most of that race on the bridle and if anything hit the front too soon to give Wissahickon something to aim at. With today’s contest sure to be run in a similar way, Beringer will surely travel nicely into contention again – perhaps a slightly later challenge can bear fruit?

Newmarket 4.45: Natural Scenery

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor is hitting form now, following the lead of Godolphin colleague Charlie Appleby and after saddling the big winner here on Thursday can land another decent pot with Natural Scenery.

The mare has been falling between having to lump big weights in handicaps and not being quite up to group class. However the handicapper has dropped her slightly after a disappointing return to racing in Britain in the Northumberland Plate. Things did not go her way that day however – she was held wide throughout and raced without her usual headgear (cheekpieces reapplied today).

Second in that race last year, she was also an unlucky third in the Ebor over this 14f trip proving her ability to handle fast ground turf. She is now on a mark lower than for both of those fine efforts last summer and at current odds makes plenty of appeal as an each-way wager.

Recommended bets:

1pt win – Wissahickon – 3.00 Newmarket – 11/4 Paddy Power

0.75pts each-way – Beringer – 3.00 Newmarket – 13/2 Bet365 (¼ odds first 3)

1pt each-way – Natural Scenery – 4.45 Newmarket – 8/1 Bet365 (¼ odds first 3)
