Hoping to find comfort in Tandem at York

Ray Flanagan with Saturday selections

thought for the day: I will be jumping for joy if Nadal and Kerber can win the titles at Wimbledon. The shrewdie’s among you would give them two chances however – bob hope and no hope.

John Smith’s Magnet Cup Day at York and I am hoping the Irish raider can upset the apple-cart.

Ascot 1.20- Beat The Bank

Beat The Bank was a progressive type last summer winning three times including twice at listed level albeit they may not have been the strongest graded races. Has struggled since moving upped in class but encouraging sixth in the Queen Anne last time. Vibes are that turning track may suit the selection more than main rivals and sporting chance of getting back in the winners enclosure.

York 3.40- Tandem and Mordin

An exposed nine-year old is hardly the first port of call in trying to find the winner this famous handicap, but Tandem is a remarkably consistent type who appears to retain most of his ability and only last season won the Nasrullah handicap off top-weight at Leopardstown prior to enduring a troubled passage in the McDonagh Handicap at Galway. Reasonable return to action this season behind Sea The Lion at Cork and ten furlongs on a galloping track should prove ideal this afternoon.

Mordin on the other hand is a much more unexposed type. Representing former Godolphin frontman Simon Crisford he has decent form at a lower level and his recent Windsor second has been well advertised by the third Rainbow Rebel subsequently. Suspicion there is more in the locker and looks to possess the bit of tactical pace which has been needed to win this race in recent years.
