Steve Hughes has two jumpers to follow on Sunday
It is jumps racing all the way in Britain today with all three meetings over the obstacles. I have selections from two of the better races. We had to settle for a couple of each-way placed horses yesterday through Spanish City (advised 9/1) and Brorocco (advised 10/1).
Stratford 4.20: Melody of Scotland
After a very encouraging British debut at Aintree, Melody of Scotland can reward jockey Barry Geraghty’s trip to Stratford for just this single ride with victory.
The filly had run two promising races in France in the spring of 2017, winning in Bordeaux having barely come off the bridle throughout. It was then a full year before she ran again, this time under the care of Alan King.
She was far from disgraced to be third, beaten 4l in a competitive Aintree heat under today’s pilot and he was obviously impressed enough to come back across to ride her in this relatively modest prize. Her French form suggests her high cruising speed is a major asset which bodes well around this tight track.
Southwell 4.30: Mister Fizz
Transferred to experienced handler Alex Hales having left his previous small yard, Mister Fizz might benefit from that change of scenery and justify each-way support here.
Just two starts ago Mister Fizz was finishing third in a Cheltenham class 3 handicap on similar good ground under today’s rider Lorcan Williams. The pilot’s 7lb claim will come in handy as he ensures the selection gets a reasonable racing weight. This also represents a significant drop in class as the gelding has yet to race in a race a low as class 4.
Consistency has never been his strong point, but on his day he is a fine hurdler, having won a valuable Newton Abbot prize off 140 in 2015. Only rated 121 these days if Hales can bring about some recovery in form then he looks well in today.
1pt win – Melody of Scotland – 4.20 Stratford – 7/4 general
0.75pts each-way – Mister Fizz – 4.30 Southwell – 14/1 Coral, SportingBet
