Thorpe to take Ayr Crown

Steve Hughes has a best bet for Monday

The race of the day on Monday takes place at Ayr, a class 2 handicap featuring several in-form rivals. One of the two 3yo’s in the field is fancied. We managed to get a good early price about the well backed Southwell winner Mister Fizz yesterday (advised 14/1).

Ayr 4.05: Crownthorpe

An excellent Monday feature with plenty of pace expected – and that should suit the down in trip Crownthorpe, the mount of former champion jockey Paul Hanagan.

Richard Fahey’s 3yo has taken in two of the best handicaps for that age group in recent weeks with great credit. He was fourth at York last time, where the 10f trip probably stretched his stamina. However he finished ahead of Communique who won at Newmarket’s July meeting last week.

Prior to that he was third over this mile trip at Haydock. Generally a hold up horse, there is reason to think the pace might collapse here and this horse is a strong enough traveller to stay in touch early. His mark of 88 remains very fair.

Recommended bets:

1pt each-way – Crownthorpe – 4.05 Ayr – 13/2 general
