Steve Hughes has three selections for the middle day at Goodwood
It is fillies day on Thursday with the Nassau Stakes providing the third Group 1 contest of the week and the Lillie Langtry a competitive race for the stayers. I have selections from both plus one in the opening handicap. Our winning run continued through Soto Sizzler (20/1) and Medahim (SP 7/1) at Goodwood yesterday
Goodwood 1.50: Communique
Mark Johnston’s horses have a terrific record over the years at this meeting and have already been on the winners board this week and in Communique, Johnston has a typical tough and talented handicapper to go into battle with.
The 3yo has already won two valuable prizes in similar contests with victory in the London Cup at Newbury and latterly the bet365 Handicap at Newmarket’s July meeting. On both occasions he looked to be second best a furlong out before rallying gamely to get in front close home.
He has the tactical pace to race handily which is sometimes an advantage in the longer races around here. The presence of Zaman means Communique gets in to this race with a nice racing weight of 8-13 and with the master tactician Silvestre de Sousa on board, there is plenty in this colt’s favour.
Goodwood 2.25: God Given
A progressive filly, God Given has long given the impression she will improve for a step up in trip and she gets the opportunity to try 14f for the first time this afternoon.
She took four attempts to get off the mark in maiden company, but once she did win at Haydock last June, she has barely taken a backward step since. Her next two starts saw her land a listed contest and then Group 3 over 12f on soft going.
Her form this season has all been on faster ground – and she has proven just as adept on a quick surface. Having needed her first run she landed another Group 3 at Haydock in gutsy fashion and was then just beaten on the nod at this level at the same track last time. A prominent racer, her galloping style should see her to maximum effect at this longer distance.
Goodwood 3.35: Veracious
A small field but an interesting Nassau nevertheless with the least experienced in the field, Veracious favoured and give Frankie Dettori compensation for his recent suspension.
She had just the two races in maiden company as a juvenile and after a run for experience on debut at Newbury, she scorched away from the opposition next time at Newmarket, winning by 4l. I am not sure if she had a small problem at the beginning of the season, but the next time we saw her was in a Group 1 at Royal Ascot.
Despite sweating freely and racing keenly out in front she made a very good account of herself to be third to the ultra impressive Alpha Centauri in the Coronation Stakes. In spite of her keen going nature she saw out the mile trip strongly and with the benefit of that outing behind her she ought to be less buzzy today, in which case this sharp 10f should be ideal.

1pt win – God Given – 2.25 Goodwood – 100/30 general
