Steve Hughes has a couple of selections for an interest on Sunday
This has to be one of the lowest key Sunday’s racing for a while with no action at all in Ireland and two modest meetings in England. However I have a couple of best bets – one from each card. We had a decent start to September with a win for Litterale Ci (SP 7/1) and a placed effort from each-way selection Lualiwa (SP 11/1).
Brighton 3.00: Lightning Charlie
There are a few good old stalwarts here and the fancy is the 6yo Lightning Charlie who seemed to enjoy the unusual contours of Brighton on his first visit here last week.
Despite enduring a troubled run, jockey Jason Watson was able to pull him out in time to speed past Wotadoll, eventually drawing 2l clear. This is a horse who has had difficulty getting his head in front in the past, but the short, sharp uphill finish seems to suit him as he can be delivered for a strong late run.
Most if his best form has been on tracks favouring hold up horses, his best run prior to that win coming when second at Ascot in July. That track provided his one previous turf win, but he has also performed with credit in much better handicaps in the past and his high cruising speed can give him a tactical advantage over a couple of other horses who tended to finish fast in Hart Stopper and Pour la Victoire.
Worcester 4.15: Talent to Amuse
The one horse with great potential to improve beyond her current rating is the lightly raced hurdler Talent to Amuse and provided her temperament does not get the better of her she looks the solid option in Worcester’s feature.
The 5yo ran up a hat-trick in the spring of 2017 in novice company, all on good going and sharp tracks – her Kempton win being most impressive as she continually jumped out to her left – something that won’t be an issue around Worcester. However she fell at the first attempting to win the big juvenile handicap at Chepstow’s autumn meeting.
Given a break after that she returned from an outing on the flat at the same track last month. She gave trouble loading in the stalls and then reared coming out of the boxes and never really got involved after that. However that will have at least served a purpose for trainer Emma Lavelle of getting her fit and there are no stalls to worry about today.
1pt win – Lightning Charlie – 3.00 Brighton – 13/8 general
1pt win – Talent To Amuse – 4.15 Worcester – 110/30 general
