Ray Flanagan with Sunday selections
thoughts for the day: Last night in the US Open final,We seen the emergence of the new star of women’s tennis in the shape of the shy Japanese girl Naomi Osaka. What a talent.
No matter how good you are, there eventually comes a day when you meet someone who is better than you and Serena Williams after twenty years of dominating womens tennis met her match last night.
I was disgusted at the booing actions of the New York crowd but fair play to Williams who pleaded with them to allow Osaka her moment.
Anyway a few horse racing selections for the crack today.
York 2.20- Kings Pavillon
Has suffered more than most due to the dry summer with good to firm ground not being suitable. Looks well overpriced though on basis of solid efforts at Wetherby and Epsom in early summer and with the rain having arrived no forlorn hope today.
York 4.00- Winter Lion
Was previously a useful dual purpose type in Ireland before losing his love for the game. Somewhat revived by switch to Fergal O Brien and respectable few placed efforts in 3 mile handicap chases over the summer. Hard to know if still will have the necessary pace for a flat handicap but not badly treated and worth chancing.
Listowel 3.45- Cerealalice
I had monitored this mares progress in maiden company over the winter where her lack of hurdling technique was hampering her. Still far from the finished article but is gradually improving and plenty to like about her penultimate effort at Tipperary behind Lord Erskine. Has the ability if jumping well enough today.
