Steve Hughes has a couple of bets for Doncaster on Thursday
Whilst the classiest races are earlier on the Doncaster card, the better bets look later in the day.
Doncaster 4.05: Buccaneers Vault
Buccaneers Vault landed this same lady riders race on the card last season with a strong finish off a fast early pace. I fancy history to repeat itself this afternoon.
Paul Midgley’s 6yo has not won off a mark as high as 80 before, but he ran a decent race in the grey horse race at Newmarket last time and this track favours hold up horses like him far more. He used a strong pace to win at Thirsk in June and with a huge field lining up here there will surely be another solid gallop today.
Georgia Cox was the successful pilot last season and she is back on board today. Ground conditions come alike to the gelding and he has been in solid form all season – however I suspect this stiff 6f and fast pace to bring out the very best in this sprinter.
Doncaster 4.40: Banditry
With the ground drying once more at Doncaster, Banditry has to be given a good chance in this 10f handicap.
A winner over course and distance in the autumn of 2016 (albeit via the stewards room), Banditry is the height of consistency on a sound surface. Galloping tracks suit him well, as that win here testifies to. His two best performances this term have both come at York including at the Ebor meeting on his last start when third to Pivoine.
Whilst he is raised 2lbs for that, he has not had an overly hard season, so should be at peak form for today and trainer Ian Williams continues to fire home the winners having landed the Leger Legends race yesterday.
0.75pts each-way – Buccaneers Vault – 4.05 Doncaster – 12/1 general
1pt win – Banditry – 4.40 Doncaster – 3/1 general
