Steve Hughes has two picks for Warwick’s new season
Now an all jump racing track, Warwick swings into action for the new season with a competitive card highlighted by a class looking chase in race 5. I have selections for that and the preceding staying hurdles contest.
Warwick 4.05: Silk Run
Of little account in her first few races, a step up in trip has transformed Silk Run and she can land the hat-trick for up and coming trainer Tom Lacey.
Although she showed some form over 2m and a little beyond in the spring, Silk Run was being well beaten as recently as the end of June at Cartmel over 2m1f. Almost as a last resort Lacey opted to step her up to 2m4f at Bangor in August and the mare responded with a smooth 10l success in an admittedly weak contest.
However there was no doubting her improvement when move up to 2m7f for the first time at the same track last month – this time she came home 4l clear in a handicap, so the form stacks up better this time. There is every reason to think she can cope with another 3f today and she will get her preferred good going once again. She looks a horse on the up against more exposed rivals.
Warwick 4.40: Call to Order
Although a somewhat quirky character, Call To Order has a very solid record at 3m and beyond and having seemingly improved for chasing he can step up again as he returns to longer trips at Warwick this afternoon.
Four times he has run over at least 3m with a record of 1226 – that win being gained in a valuable class 2 contest at Cheltenham. He also seems most at home on good ground which he will get again today.
His form had bottomed out somewhat over the smaller obstacles, but he has bounced back to form in two chases recently. Ridden much more positively he was a good second at Worcester in June before battling back to lead close home over 2m3f at Market Rasen. I think he will be much more at home over this longer trip and therefore can find the improvement necessary to score again.
1pt win – Silk Run – 4.05 Warwick – 2/1 general
0.75pts each-way – Call to Order – 4.40 Warwick – 11/2 Bet365 (¼ odds first 3)
