Head East for Thursday’s best bet

Steve Hughes has one selection for the opening day of Newmarket’s major September fixture

A quiet enough opening day to begin a three day fixture at flat racing’s British HQ. I have one selection on the card.

Newmarket 4.45: Star of the East

Star of the East vs Byron Flyer is 1-1 and I take the Mark Johnston trained 4yo to come out on top in the best of three.

Star of the East got the better of his rival on the July Course here over 14f last month in receipt of 4lbs, but could not hold the older horse off on 7lbs worse terms and 2f shorter at Doncaster recently. They race off level weights today and in theory should be very close to one another.

However I think the drying ground will be in Star of the East’s favour and having been 2-2 on the July Course this summer, he should enjoy this similar track with its mile long finishing straight. Whilst the horse is probably best at 14f now, Silvestre de Sousa is on board today and won’t be slow in making this a test of stamina if nobody else wants to go on early.

Recommended bet:

1pt win – Star of the East – 4.45 Newmarket – 9/2 Paddy Power
