Steve Hughes has selections for the best of Tuesday’s racing
There are a couple of quality handicaps worthy of further attention on Tuesday. Both each-way selections on Sunday were placed – Caroles Destrier (advised 6/1) and Baron Alco (advised 8/1).
Leicester 3.05: Graphite Storm
After a poor start to 2018, Graphite Storm has been running into form of late and a return to the scene of his last victory last September can be the catalyst to victory again here.
Clive Cox’s 4yo will relish the softer ground he will find at Leicester today, having won over this 7f trip under similar conditions last year from just a 1lb lower mark. He also has a win to his name on good-to-soft at Newbury as well as a fine second in a similar class 2 handicap at the same track on soft.
He was also third in that same Newbury race in August on much quicker going and backed that up with a second at Ascot last time over a mile. I get the feeling that trip just stretches him, but a stiff 7f is ideal and Adam Kirby is getting down to pretty much his lowest weight to take the ride here.
Kempton 8.15: Argentello
It looks best to concentrate here on a group of improving 3yo’s and Argentello might just be the pick.
John Gosden’s colt is unproven on an artificial surface but is improving and in good form. Having been beaten in three 10f maidens at the start of the season, connections have realised he is better at a mile and he has progressed nicely through the handicap ranks since.
Third at Newmarket’s July meeting he made no mistake at the same track last time when beating Via Via by a length. He is up another 5lbs today, but there is no telling yet when his run will come to an end.
1pt each-way – Graphite Storm – 3.05 Leicester – 15/2 general
1pt win – Argentello – 8.15 Kempton – 9/2 Ladbrokes
