Hoping all will be Magical in the Breeders Cup

Ray Flanagan with Saturday selections

thought for the day: Take time to talk to a neighbour

Mawaany (5-1) and Maze Runner (5-1) were winners last weekend. A few for an interest this Saturday where the Breeders Cup action is the main interest.

Newmarket 2.00- Juanito Chico

Has been quiet this season but mark has fallen as a consequence and nicely treated now off 80 if he can recapture his best form. Moved to Stuart Williams in September and despite not featuring in two outings so far they were stronger races than today’s and the horse showed promise both times, it was not as if he was out with the washing.

Looks worth chancing at big odds today.

Churchhill Downs 6.04- Sistercharlie

A strong European challenge, but they do not look unbeatable and it might be worth siding with the home runner Sistercharlie. Formerly French trained, she was a good second in the 2017 French Oaks and has been making hay since switching Stateside this season showing good turns of foot to win her last three races.

This is tougher but Chad Brown likely to have her primed and may be good enough.

Churchill 7.36- Expert Eye and Lightning Spear,

The recent rainfall is a concern but otherwise Expert Eye makes appeal. It does not look the strongest renewal and while Michael Stoute’s horse is a little below the top level he has that touch of change of gear that you need to have in a Breeders Cup winner. He arguably got racing for home too soon in the Sussex Stakes in July and was staying in well at the finish of the Moulin last time. If Dettori rides him for a turn of foot he could be the one.

Lightning Spear’s form has tapered of towards the end of the campaign but he may just be suited to the demands of this track and would merit consideration on the basis of his Sussex Stakes win and Lockinge second.

Churchhill 8.58- Magical

Enable produced some performance to win an Arc off being 85% fit and on face value if she improves for that effort there is only one winner. However pushing a horse to he maximum when they are not fully wound up raises question marks for me and I am happy to take her on.

Is it Waldgeist or Magical though is the question.

Magical makes appeal on the basis that she is really finding her form now at the back-end of the season and any further progress from her Ascot win could see her go very close.
