Russian fits the Bill at Leopardstown

Ray Flanagan with Leopardstown Friday selections

thought for the day:”I must bring more discipline to my punting

A cracking card on Day 3 of Leopardstown featuring the Savills Chase. A few selections worthy of an interest.

Leopardstown 12.45- Russian Bill

Previously second in this race behind Forever Gold albeit that was three years ago. Following a lengthy period on the sidelines he has returned to the track with two efforts this season and plenty to like about his latest run at Navan when sixth to Salty Boy. Looks interesting off a low weight back up to 3 miles.

Leopardstown 2.25- Wee Small Hours/ Bothar Dubh/Smithscorner

At big prices, I will back three in this.

Wee Small Hours returned to the track after a summer break with a promising front running effort at Navan. Generally a weak finisher under softer conditions last season, he could enjoy the quicker ground this afternoon which could play to his strength which is pace.

Smithscorner looks arguably the most solid option in the race. He has been placed twice this season already at Fairyhouse and Cork and appeals as the solid each-way option in the race.

Possibly an interesting runner is Bothar Dubh at the foot of the weights. He was not sighted in three previous maiden hurdle efforts but has been in good form recently between the flags winning two points in the last six weeks. In-addition, his pedigree as a relation of former useful staying chaser Merigo is encouraging and a mark of 86 could easily be exploitable.

Leopardstown 3.00- Bellshill and Coney Island

Bellshill ran two stormers on his most recent starts- fourth under a big weight in the Irish National and a resolute success in the Punchestown Gold Cup. He could easily emerge as the best Gold Cup candidate of these and looks backable at a price of 6-1.

Coney Island may be the forgotten horse. A highly useful novice a few seasons ago, his form includes victories over  Anibale Fly and a narrow defeat by Our Duke in the Grade One novice race. Lightly campaigned last season he was only 8-1 for the Gold Cup at one point following his Ascot win. His seasonal debut over hurdles was respectable and makes definite each-way appeal here with underfoot conditions in his favour.
