Ray Flanagan with Meydan Thursday selections
Aux Ptits Soins (11-2) was the first and hopefully not the last winner of this new year, the year 2019.
While we are in the heart of the jump season at present, I am a flat racing person at heart, and it is nice to see the start of the Meydan Carnival which will be running now for a number of Thursdays up until early March.
A few selections for an interest.
Meydan 2.30- Basateen
Regular Meydan campaigner who looks the value option in the race. Has the benefit of a recent run unlike many of his rivals following a good second at Abu Dhabi behind the former John Gosden-trained Brass Ring. Entitled to be there or thereabouts if improving slightly on two good efforts last year behind Benbatl and Leshlaa with this contest a shade easier.
Meydan 4.50- Bay Of Poets and Deauville
Bay of Poets caught the eye in what I think was the corresponding event 12 months ago won by Benbatl. Bay was racing noticeable wide that day and made swift headway from an unpromising position in the straight. Appeals as the type who could do better at this years Carnival.
Deauville arguably has the best form overall especially his 2017 efforts where he was third in the Queen Anne Stakes. Fair effort in the Irish Champion on final start for O’ Brien and could have a class edge here on his Dubai debut.
Plenty with chances but Seniority appeals at the opening 12-1 with bet 365. Winner of the Golden Mile at Goodwood last summer he has displayed his best form at Chelmsford which is a level speedy galloping track similar to Meydan. Was found out in the Hunt Cup at Ascot (stiff mile and raced away from the main pace) but showed a nice turn of foot to win at Goodwood and looks to have the necessary speed for the 7 furlongs here.
